Volunteer with DC safe

Volunteers have always been essential to DC SAFE’s mission. We are grateful to every individual who dedicates time, skills, and energy to help us create safer, more supportive communities. If you’re interested in volunteering with us, please fill out this form. While there are many ways to get involved, explore some of our most popular volunteer opportunities below!

decorate the safe space shelter

Spread joy and warmth by decorating our shelter intake office and/or rooftop community room for any holiday throughout the year - major or minor! By volunteering for our holiday decorating initiative, you'll not only brighten the spirits of residents and families staying at our shelter, but also contribute to creating a sense of community and belonging. Please note that volunteers will need to bring their own decorations. Many volunteers will work with a company or organization that they are a part of to collect or purchase the decorations. Groups will often include treat bags or items for shelter residents at the welcome table in the shelter entrance.

facilitate a group activity

Have a skill you’d like to share? We welcome volunteers interested in leading group activities for our clients or staff, such as self-care classes (i.e., arts & crafts, yoga, or journaling) and educational or awareness discussions.

Additional Opportunity

THE MPD DOMESTIC VIOLENCE LIAISON PROGRAM

Please click here if you are interested in volunteering with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Domestic Violence Liaison Ride-Along Program. This volunteer opportunity is fully organized by MPD. It allows citizen volunteers to ride along with patrol officers and provide victims of domestic violence with resources and information provided by DC SAFE. Volunteers will receive at least 20 hours of specialized training provided by DC SAFE, as well as MPD volunteer training, and will sign up for shifts to ride along with officers. Volunteers will not act as law enforcement personnel or advocates, but rather to be a liaison between DC SAFE, MPD, and domestic violence victims in need of information about services, including women’s shelter. These volunteers will join the ranks of the MPD Citizen Volunteers and will provide critical information and resources to a vulnerable population.
