Volunteer programs

Volunteers have always been an integral part of who we are at DC SAFE. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please see our most popular options below.

Decorate at the SAFE Space Shelter

Spread joy and warmth by decorating our shelter intake office and/or rooftop community room for any holiday throughout the year - major or minor! By volunteering for our holiday decorating initiative, you'll not only brighten the spirits of residents and families staying at our shelter, but also contribute to creating a sense of community and belonging. Please note that volunteers will need to bring their own decorations. To sign up for a specific holiday, please email donations@dcsafe.org. Your creativity and enthusiasm can make a meaningful difference in creating a welcoming and festive atmosphere at SAFE Space!

facilitate a group activity

Have a skill you would like to share? We're welcoming volunteers this summer who are interested in leading group activities for our adult survivors and/or their families, such as arts & crafts, journaling sessions, and education/awareness discussions. We’re also inviting volunteers to host our summer welcome table! Please email donations@dcsafe.org to get involved.

JOIN THE MPD DOMESTIC VIOLENCE LIAISON PROGRAM

If you are interested in volunteering with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Domestic Violence Liaison Ride-Along Program, please click here. This volunteer opportunity is fully organized by MPD. It allows citizen volunteers to ride along with patrol officers and provide victims of domestic violence with resources and information provided by DC SAFE. Volunteers will receive at least 20 hours of specialized training provided by DC SAFE, as well as MPD volunteer training, and will sign up for shifts to ride along with officers. Volunteers will not act as law enforcement personnel or advocates, but rather to be a liaison between DC SAFE, MPD, and domestic violence victims in need of information about services, including women’s shelter. These volunteers will join the ranks of the MPD Citizen Volunteers and will provide critical information and resources to a vulnerable population.
