expanding safe space
On July 20, 2023 we proudly hosted the Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for our brand new SAFE Space Crisis Shelter. Our shelter program is the only one of its kind in the District of Columbia that can make 24/7 immediate placements for survivors and families within an hour of a domestic violence incident.
We began the SAFE Space program in 2011 to meet a need for dignified crisis housing that could help survivors obtain immediate safety and preserve their existing resources. Moving forward, our new 30-unit crisis shelter will triple our capacity, housing an estimated 750 survivors and families each year. Expanding SAFE Space ensures that these individuals have access to secure housing, support services, and other necessities.
the new building
The new facility is primely located in the Eckington neighborhood—close to the courthouse, NOMA-Gallaudet Metro, two major bus routes, and other community services. The building provides durable, comfortable, and flexible residential units ranging from studios to three bedrooms, with the ability to expand and contract based on family size. Other features include private entrances for shelter residents, ample space for survivors to meet with DC SAFE advocates, 24/7 security, as well as laundry facilities, recreational areas for adults, and a rooftop play area for children. In addition, the new building offers significant commercial office space for nonprofit partners. The DC Forensic Nurse Examiners will offer critical healthcare services to survivors on-site and the Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Abuse will provide therapy. Open Arms Housing will also be joining as a tenant in the new space.
